iOS 9 is sounding like it will be an impressive update, even if the main focus of this release is for optimizations and enhancements behind the scenes.

It will also include support for Force Touch for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, redesigned keyboard and more granular control over read receipts in iMessage. We’ve also heard that iOS 9 will see a makeover for Siri, finally bring transit data for Apple Maps, while also bringing a new font – San Francisco – across the entire system to keep the aesthetic fresh.

Apple will most likely seed the first beta version of June 8th to developers, followed by the release in September, just before the launch of iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

iOS 9 feature wish list: Spotlight Search API

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 9 next week at WWDC 2015. Details on the update to iOS are a closely guarded secret with only a few rumors hinting at improvements to Siri, Spotlight, and Maps. One area we would like to see improved is Spotlight Search, which allows you to search for items and pull data from Apple’s integrated apps.

Third-Party Support

Spotlight is a useful tool for pulling information from Apple’s stock apps from iOS. You can glean information from stored notes, iCloud calendar events, Mail messages and internet sources such as Bing. Spotlight is a closed system that does not include information from third-party apps in its queries. If Apple opened up access to Spotlight for third-party app developers, services like Evernote or IMDb could add this support to their iOS apps. You then could search through your existing database of notes or the IMDb catalog directly from the Spotlight interface.

Spotlight Intelligence

Spotlight is a search tool, but it could be so much more if Apple added contextual awareness into the mix. The company is rumored to be adding this intelligence to Spotlight in an initiative called “Proactive.” According to sources familiar with the project, Proactive will produce a Google Now competitor that mines information from Apple technology such as Siri, Contacts, Calendar, and Passbook, as well as third-party apps. This new intelligent search wizard reportedly is based on technology the company acquired from Cue and will provide information based on a user’s location, time and device usage patterns.
